Urban Meyer: Heisman Creator? Part 2

Urban Meyer’s previous two offensive superstars have both been mobile quarterbacks, which makes sense given his offensive system. Both Alex Smith and Tim Tebow have the passing ability to keep defenses on their heels, while at the same time moving the chains with their legs. However, Meyer currently has a different type of player that I think he will attempt to groom into a bona fide 2008 Heisman Trophy favorite – Percy Harvin.

Back in 2005, Harvin was the top high school player in the country. At Virginia Beach Landstown he was a real threat both running and catching the ball. At Florida he has also made a huge impact. As a freshman Harvin racked up over 800 all-purpose yards, and nearly doubled that total in 2007, when he had 1622.

However, there is potential for Harvin to do so much more in Urban Meyer’s offense. In 2008, you can expect that Meyer will try and lessen the amount of hits that Tebow takes during the season. In addition, Emmanuel Moody should be able to shoulder some of the inside running load. What this means is that Harvin should have more opportunities and more running lanes to the outside. In 2007 Harvin had 83 carries for 764 yards, a 9.2 yard per carry average. It is not out of the question for him to surpass 1000 yards rushing in 2008.

As a receiver Harvin also has some upside. In 2007 Harvin nearly doubled both his receptions and yardage totals, coming through with 59 catches and 858 yards. As both Harvin and Tebow mature and build a greater rapport, expect the tandem to hook up more often, as Harvin is a prototypical big play threat at wide receiver.

Finally, a final reason to believe that Harvin has the potential to win the Heisman Trophy this season is the fact that he put up his gaudy numbers while missing two games in 2007. If he is able to stay healthy for the entire season it will naturally increase his counting stats. Unfortunately, Harvin recently had successful heel surgery, and while he is expected back for fall practice, Gator fans cannot like the idea of their star missing all of the spring.

Everyone knows that the Florida offense, led by the arm of Tim Tebow and the mind of Urban Meyer, will be one of the most potent in the country. However, do not be surprised if this season, a new star emerges. Coach Meyer knows how to create points, wins, and statistics. It would not shock me if Percy Harvin is the main beneficiary this season, and goes on to win college football’s most prestigious award.
