Woody Hayes is one of the most legendary coaches in college football history. His memorable 10 year war with Bo Schembechler at Michigan has built the foundation for the gripping rivalry that is still as competitive as ever between the two schools. In his 28 seasons at Ohio State he won 5 National Championships and 13 Big Ten Championships.
Woody played his college days at Denison University as a starting tackle. He later started his coaching career at Denison where he coached for 3 seasons before taking over at Miami (OH). While at Miami he mentored Schembechler and molded him into his own worst enemy. Hayes is just one of many great head coaches to have coached at Miami of Ohio. Such names as Ara Parseghian, Randy Walker, and Bo Schembechler has given the school the nickname of the "Cradle of Coaches."
After coaching Miami (OH) to a Salad Bowl victory in 1950 he took over at Ohio State in 1951. While at OSU had had wild success. Unfortunately his legacy is tarnished due to the way he exited the coaching world after throwing a punch at a Clemson linebacker in the Gator Bowl after he intercepted a critical pass in the late stages of the game. Hayes passed away in 1987, but is still an overwhelming presence around the Ohio State football program.
