On December 8th Navy chose Ken Niumatalolo to take over for the Midshipmen in the wake of the departure of Paul Johnson to Georgia Tech. Niumatalolo is the first Polynesian and Samoan head coach in D1-FBS. Before coaching, Niumatalolo quarterbacked the Hawai'i Rainbows to their first ever post season bowl game appearance. He went on to coach Hawai'i after graduation in 1990-1994 under Paul Johnson. This was the start of a long coaching relationship between Johnson and Niumatalolo which more than likely lead to the hiring of Niumatalolo as head man for Navy.
Niumatalolo first became an offensive coordinator in 1997 for Navy where he coached QB Chris McCoy. McCoy was the record holder for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback at 20. That record was broken by Tim Tebow in 2007. After taking a 3 year stint as the assistant coach at UNLV, Niumatalolo returned in 2002 to Navy once again as the offensive line coach under Paul Johnson. During his time, his offenses have had great success running the football. Navy is consistently up top in rushing YPG, however they often times abandon the passing game.
Niumatalolo has undoubtedly been a part of some very productive Navy offenses while under Paul Johnson, but he never once called a play for the Midshipmen. More than likely the success of Navy was due to Johnson, but not Niumatalolo. He is however a great coach for a smooth transition in Annapolis. Much remains to be seen as to whether Navy can continue their offensive success under Niumatalolo, but one thing's for sure: the 2008 Navy team is going to look an awful lot like the 2007 one.
