Johnson Ramblin' to the ATL

Georgia Tech got it right with this hire folks. Johnson will be a helleva ball coach for the Ramblin' Wreck. He has head coaching experience and should be a good fit personality wise. Johnson's resume of Navy head coach, Georgia Southern head coach, and offensive coordinator at those two schools plus Hawaii does raise a few few questions.

He's been at Navy and Georgia Southern (FCS) since 1997 which put him in a different market as far as hiring assistants. How well Johnson is able to assemble a BCS conference quality staff will be critical. He has one of the best assistants sitting right there in Atlanta, defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta. Retaining him is critical. If that happens, Tech will be in contention for the ACC as soon as next season.

He's never coached at a BCS institution. His offense has never been in a BCS conference. The rumors are that he will tweak his double wing attack to look more like that of West Virginia's spread. I hope he doesn't and I think he may be better off by staying with the same offense. That's what he knows best. If he moves to a spread he's playing his second best hand. Johnson should stick with what works for him. I also think that it will give Tech a recruiting advantage. The offense requires different types of athletes, those who are less sought after in recruiting. Every fullback in the country would want to play at Tech because they'll be featured more. Smaller, more athletic offensive lineman who get passed up by Georgia for being a little small work perfect for the double wing. The athletic high school option quarterback that Auburn wants to play safety, he'll come to Tech to play quarterback. Some of the concepts of Moneyball apply. The Oakland A's were able to find quality where others weren't looking. The double wing offense allows for Tech to do the same. With the double wing, Johnson can win big at Georgia Tech.
