Mississippi. Ole Miss acted quickly and got the right guy in Houston Nutt. It will be interesting to find out just how long in the works this deal was. Ed Orgeron was in the process of stockpiling talent in the Grove and Nutt will come in and take the Rebels bowling right away, maybe in his first year. Nutt started off 8-0 at Arkansas before Clint Stoerner's fumble. Ole Miss did a nice job keeping this move under raps.
Colorado State. Maybe the most interesting story out of Black Monday is the drama going on in Fort Collins. Many heavy hitting alums and former players have been very vocal about their displeasure over the forced exit of legendary Ram Sonny Lubick. After enduing the fourth consecutive losing season and attendance dwindling, a move was probably necessary. Both parties are making the situation much messier than what Lubick would have liked.
Northern Illinois. NIU was able to part ways with longtime head coach Joe Novak in a fashion that must make the folks in Fort Collins jealous. Novak stated at his closing press conference that he was told by athletic director Jim Phillips he could stay and coach at NIU for as long as he liked, but he felt it was time to hang it up. In recent years, Phillips and Novak have been able to gain attention for Huskie football in the Chicago market. The NIU job is one of the most attractive MAC jobs. The talented Phillips will use the Atlanta-based search firm Parker & Associates as he did in hiring their men's basketball coach. Phillips well get a talented guy who will have NIU at the top of the MAC again in short order.
Southern Miss. It seems to be unanimous. The ousting of Jeff Bower has gotten the most criticism out of all the moves on Monday. His 17 years at Southern Miss made him the fourth most tenured coach in division I-A behind Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden, and Frank Beamer. Bower is being rumored to be in consideration for the job at Duke.
One Interview. Mike Sherman at Texas A&M and Houston Nutt at Mississippi were the only candidates to interview for those respective jobs. Expect the universities to come under heat for that, as Barry Alvarez did when only interviewing Brett Bielima. The ever-PC conscience Michigan has interviews both of Carr's coordinators, Mike DeBord and Ron English - who is African-American.
