Digesting the Weekend

Nobody is Unbeatable

Going back to my original thoughts a few weeks back about 4 weeks ago I felt that there were four teams who were basically untouchable this season. Those four teams were Florida, LSU, Oklahoma, and USC. LSU is the only one of those teams yet to lose, and they were trailing to a one loss Florida team with a minute left in the game. Oklahoma and USC were both rocked with major upsets over the course of the last two weeks. I have to imagine that USC has essentially little to no chance of making it to the championship after losing to 40 point underdog Stanford this past weekend. Oklahoma on the other hand has the ability to run the tables the rest of the way and get into the championship.

National Championship Forecast

With all that has transpired over the course of the last 2 weeks, one has to wonder who's going to wind up in the championship. LSU is still undefeated and even if they lose one tough SEC game should still make the championship. One wild card in all this is if South Carolina runs the tables and knocks off an undefeated LSU team in the SEC championship game. Will we see a Michigan vs Ohio State effect where the one loss LSU Tigers will not play a one loss South Carolina team in the national championship due to the teams already playing in each other during the season? No team besides LSU has an easy road to the championship game. It's definitely possible for another highly ranked team to go undefeated, but everybody has a very difficult path. Assuming there are no undefeated teams remaining, Oklahoma looks poised to be challenging LSU for the BCS championship.

Oh Woe is the Heisman

There hasn't been a worse year for the Heisman running than this season. Players are doing all they can to eliminate themselves from the running. The Heisman Pundit believes that McFadden is winning in a landslide at this point in the season, despite the losses to Arkansas. My issue with this is that McFadden may not be the best player in the country and he's on a team that could easily wind up with 4 or 5 losses. Colt Brennan has been less than spectacular when he needed to be near perfect to have a chance. Tim Tebow's long shot campaign due to him being a sophomore has gone by the wayside with his team losing 2 games already despite his play. Due to all this a new batch of players are emerging into the mix such as Mike Hart, Chase Daniels, Matt Ryan, and Chase Holbrook all getting attention. Either way this Heisman chase is completely up for grabs.

Other Tidbits
  • Steve Kragthorpe is having a real rough go of it to start out at Louisville. They're 3-3 and they haven't even gotten into the bulk of the Big East schedule. Louisville is in major danger of not reaching a bowl game. At least they can take some comfort in knowing Bobby Petrino hasn't had any success with the Falcons yet this season.
  • If you get the chance to catch the replay of the Northwestern vs Michigan State game this past weekend I highly recommend watching. The teams went back and forth 13 times with TD's until Northwestern finally made a stop in overtime to pull the upset.
  • Illinois has a very legitimate shot at winning the Big Ten this season. The showdown in Columbus later this season could very well be a battle for first.
  • Bill Callahan: You are so fired.
  • In my opinion Stanford beating USC is the upset of the college football season and trumps the Appalachian State upset of Michigan. Stanford was 40 point underdogs and and one of the bottom feeders in the NCAA. If Appalachian State were to be in Div 1 A, they would be better than Stanford. Also Michigan is not nearly as good as USC. Hats off to Jim Harbaugh on the win.
  • If you haven't seen the Akron miracle finish at Western Michigan this past weekend check it out here
