Why Search Firms Are Being Used

A growing trend in the college football world is the use of a search firm to assist in hiring new football coaches. Chuck Neinas is the most well known (he also happens to be one of the most influential people in the history of college football for his work with the College Football Association in securing TV rights similar to what we know today). When schools employ his or other's services, often times supporters question the need to be spending money on something that is very much in the athletic director's job description. While Neinas may be very connected and knowledgeable of the coaching profession, lets be very clear on why he is used: so that schools can conduct their search with greater secrecy. Neinas conducts all his correspondence verbally so he leaves no paper trail. Neinas helps to keep candidate names off the message boards and limit the amount of egg of the faces of ADs when coaches snub them, and that is why he is employed.
