Chan Gailey made two interesting comments about his choice of John Bond to replace Patrick Nix as his offensive coordinator.
First: "John's success with both the running game and the passing game sets him apart. The last three years at Northern Illinois, he put together one of the best rushing attacks in the nation, but before that at Army, they threw the ball all over the place." Bond's style in those two jobs has everything to do with who his head coach was. Joe Novak at NIU and Todd Berry at Army are known for being experts in the rushing and passing game respectively. The concern with the hire is that Bond's success - much like his style - may have been the product of his head coach.
The passing success Gaily is referring to is setting school passing records at Army, which isn't saying much. Bond's Army passing offense was never better than 67th in the nation. The Berry/Bond regime went 5-36 in less than four seasons at West Point. Berry was recently hired as the offensive coordinator at UNLV. NIU's offense did improve during Bond's first two years before slipping in 2006.
Back to Gaily: "His experience at Army also shows that he can recruit the type of student-athletes that we recruit at Georgia Tech." Chan, please, Georgia Tech, with very few exceptions, does not recruit the same type of student-athlete as the United States Military Academy.
